You'd think I would be a registered nurse with all the doctor shows that I seem to watch on TV. Back in the day it started with E.R., than Grey's Anatomy and while that is on hiatus I have been catching up with Nurse Jackie and most recently HawthoRNe starring Jada Pinkett Smith. All using a hospital as the background with a different spin on the subject matter.Personality wise, Nurse Jackie and Nurse Hawthorne couldn't be more different. At the end of the day it is obvious they both have similar goals. Helping people, no matter what the cost, even if that means bending the rules, a tad.
This week, Nurse Jackie assisted in a friends suicide who was terminally ill with cancer. While Nurse Hawthorne turned a utility closet into an ICU room for a comatose patient whose son couldn't quite pull the plug. Both shows are gripping, edgy and sometimes leaves you with your mouth hanging open. I have to be mentally and emotionally prepared for these types of shows because death, illness and all the scary things that go on in a hospital lead my mind to wander to bad places and then I need to change the channel and watch an episode of Seinfeld to restore my mental sanity.
